Cultivating Faith through Service-Learning at KCS

Adopt-a-block

At Kelowna Christian School, education goes beyond the classroom walls. It's about instilling values, nurturing faith, and preparing students to be Christ-like, compassionate and engaged members of their communities. One powerful way we achieve this is through engaging in service learning (SL), an approach that intertwines academic learning with meaningful service experiences.

Mr. Sharp, who received his master's on the topic of service learning, delved into the impact of SL on students' faith development. The findings were illuminating, revealing a deeper connection between service and spiritual growth. But what exactly makes service learning such a powerful catalyst for faith formation?

The study compared service learning with traditional classroom learning and found that service was more effective in helping high school students value faith, scripture, integrity, and prayer. This speaks volumes about the transformative power of hands-on experiences. When students actively engage with their faith through service, they not only understand its principles intellectually but also internalize them on a deeper, more personal level.

Moreover, the study highlighted the importance of reflection in maximizing the effectiveness of service. By encouraging students to contemplate their service experiences, we help them connect the dots between theory and practice, fostering a more profound understanding of their faith and its implications for their lives.

But service isn't just about what happens during the projects—it's also about the journey leading up to them. Staff play a crucial role in facilitating service experiences. Acting as liaisons between KCS and service partners, while guiding students to serve. Service learning can only reach its full potential as a tool for faith formation with staff that value service.

By actively engaging in service alongside their peers and reflecting on their experiences, students have the opportunity to embody the values they've learned in the classroom. It's a holistic approach to education—one that nurtures not only the mind but also the heart and spirit.

As we reflect on the exciting endeavour that students served this year, it's essential for students to come equipped with the right mindset, students should come prepared to open their hearts to the transformative power of service.

At KCS, we believe that faith isn't just something we talk about—it's something we live out every day. Through service-learning, we're not only shaping minds but also shaping hearts, empowering students to become agents of positive change in their communities and beyond.
