OUR PURPOSE

Stories are powerful. They are the fabric of society and one of the most fundamental methods of education. Jesus taught through parables and lived the greatest story of all. Storytelling evokes emotion, encourages connection and invites the listener to engage in a deeper way to discover their story within the one being shared.

At Kelowna Christian School, we believe each moment and learning experience provides the opportunity to help our students discover their own unique and meaningful story. Most importantly, their place in God’s story.

Our desire is to partner with parents to create a safe, challenging and creative environment to inspire students to develop and find their stories. A community that strengthens the heart, soul and mind of students to discover their true potential and impact on the local and global communities. Students that are not only leaders of the next generation, but also caring servants in His kingdom through authentic, relationship with Jesus Christ. Kelowna Christian School presents life-changing education that provides a strong foundation of identity, knowledge, purpose and Christ-like character for world-changing students. Our Vision, Mission, Values help provide more information on who we are.

An important part of our school's story is our history of marrying two schools from different traditions - Evangel Academy and Kelowna Christian School. From our earliest days, we have tried to reflect and honour what is probably best described as an intentional broadly evangelical tradition. When drafting a Statement of Faith, for instance, we sought to reflect the core and essential beliefs that unite us, while allowing for flexibility where different denominations and traditions differ.

OUR STORY

THE BEGINNING

In 1978 a group of parents from Evangel Tabernacle started Evangel Christian Academy. In 1979, Kelowna Christian School, and interdenominational school with 36 students, was founded and leased the education wing of the Kelowna Alliance Church. Although the beginning was humble, these students today are serving the Lord in varied fields such as architecture, dentistry, medicine, business and church ministry, a tribute to God’s grace and faithfulness.

In 1982, two small schools (Evangel Christian Academy and Kelowna Christian School) amalgamated under the name of Kelowna Christian School (KCS). One hundred students were registered during the first year, which seriously strained the facilities of the old Evangel building on Bertram St. Extra space for two classrooms was procured in the basement of the Christian Reformed Church, just three blocks away.

In 1984, KCS leased the education wing of the newly constructed Evangel Tabernacle on Gordon Drive. A science lab, large gymnasium, library, administrative offices and spacious classrooms were the answers to many prayers. After moving the new facilities to Gordon Drive, the ability for KCS to serve the community grew significantly and with this came increased acceptance within the Christian community and rapid increase in student population. Facilities were expanded with a new elementary wing, two large multipurpose rooms, home economics and learning assistance rooms, computer room and new library in 1992. Another milestone was reached with the first graduates of KCS in June 1992.

OPENING OF THE BENVOULIN CAMPUS

To accommodate the rapid growth and success of KCS, a satellite campus was opened in September of 1994 at Trinity Baptist Church on Springfield Road. This space was home to approximately 100 grade 6 and 7 students until 1997, when the Board and Society decided a new freestanding facility was required to meet demand. Our current secondary campus on Benvoulin Road was completed in 1997 for students in grades 6-12, with further expansion of phases completed in 1998.

TODAY AND BEYOND

Kelowna Christian School celebrates over 40 years of excellence. We continue to grow and advance, while serving over 450 families and 800 students from over 55 churches in the Central Okanagan. Preschool and Elementary schools are located in the education wing at Evangel Church on Gordon Drive, with Middle/High schools and administrative offices at the Benvoulin Rd. campus.

The announcement of expanding to a third Middle School campus was announced in the Fall of 2022. Grades 6 -8 would be expanding to a new Lakeshore Campus (4091 Lakeshore Rd) in the same building as First Lutheran Church in hopes of opening doors in the Fall of 2023. KCS is excited to grow and serve families from Peachland to Lake Country.

OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH

  • The Holy Scriptures, as originally given by God, are divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy, and constitute the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
  • There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • God through His Word actively and intentionally created heaven and earth, all things seen and unseen.
  • Our Lord Jesus Christ took on human form; we affirm His virgin birth, sinless humanity, divine miracles, substitutionary and atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension, ongoing advocacy on our behalf, and personal return in power and glory.
  • The salvation of lost and sinful humanity is possible only through the death and victorious resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, received by faith.
  • The Holy Spirit regenerates sinners, and indwells, illuminates, guides, equips and empowers believers for Christ-like living and service.
  • The Church, the body of Christ, consists of all true believers.
  • Ultimately God will judge the living and the dead. The saved will be raised to joy in the new heaven and earth in the presence of God and the lost to condemnation and punishment.
